In the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, IHI continues to work on the ground in the south of Haiti with partners Jack Brewer and Haiti Air Ambulance as well as Haitian community groups. In the past couple of weeks, we have given out 550,000 water purification tablets and food to the people of Jeremie, Port a Piment and Dame Marie. East Star Medical of Miami recently donated laboratory supplies and equipment to IHI. The equipment was given to the General Hospital, Haiti's largest public hospital, located in Port-au-Prince. The donations contributed to the re-opening of the hospital's pathology lab, which had been non-functional for months. The opening of the pathology lab is a crucial step in targeting cancer in Haiti in a comprehensive manner.
IHI has been working in a clinic outside of Chantal, Haiti in recent days providing tetanus vaccines and donating supplies to victims of Hurricane Matthew. Our team of physicians and medical personnel, along with our partners, have treated 50 patients at the clinic so far. On Sunday, October 9, IHI and Haiti Air Ambulance (HAA) sent two teams to Dame Marie and Roche-a-Bateau in the southwest regions of Haiti to provide relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. The teams of physicians are the first physicians to visit these large towns. The physicians will be distributing food and water in the coming days, and will also provide medical services to those in need.
